The Science Of Getting Rich: Your Right, The Science And Opportunities
[This is part one of an analysis of the The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace Wattles]
Wallace Wattles is an interesting character. Little is known about him other than some small notes he sent to his daughter. Based on it, we discovered that he was a man who lived in poverty at the early years of his life but came to riches. Through experimentation and personal experience, he writes how one can become rich. He focuses on the process of creative visualization - which is just right for this Money Making Thoughts blog.
The book he wrote was written in 1910 but has gained recent attention because of the DVD and book “The Secret.” I’ve decided to study this book and use it as reference guide to wealth.
Chapter 1 of The Science of getting Rich begins with this:
WHATEVER may be said in praise of poverty, the fact remains that it is not possible to live a really complete or successful life unless one is rich. No man can rise to his greatest possible height in talent or soul development unless he has plenty of money; for to unfold the soul and to develop talent he must have many things to use, and he cannot have these things unless he has money to buy them with.
In this chapter Wallace discusses the fact the being rich is not just a privilege. It is our right to be rich. Being rich allows us to pursue higher, more nobler aspirations. A wealthy person is not distracted by basic needs like food, clothing, or shelter. He can focus in the higher aspirations of life - like, maybe saving the planet or making world peace?
Chapter 2:
The ownership of money and property comes as a result of doing things in a certain way; those who do things in this Certain Way, whether on purpose or accidentally, get rich; while those who do not do things in this Certain Way, no matter how hard they work or how able they are, remain poor.
Wallace proposes that we think in a certain way to become rich. I believe he talks about a disposition that one has to be in to be ready for wealth. There is a mindset that one has to adopt to readily be accessible to wealth.
He has a theory, which until proven wrong, will hold true. The theory he proposes is something he personally experienced and applied. To him, this theory will apply to everyone who adopts it. Until proven wrong by anyone who adopts it, it will make people rich.
At this point it is important to note that Wallace does not clearly define what being ‘rich’ is. Today it is important to note the wealth is also a function of time. If you can live without doing anything for six months, then you are wealthy for only six months. He simply assumes that people know what being rich is.
Then again, he also points out that man’s natural progression is to act - to continuously do something. He person who does not act is not fulfilling his natural inclination. You can’t NOT do anything. Even sleeping, your mind is proven to be functioning. You are still at it - filing and organizing memory. You still do something.
What you think and do everything should be related to how to achieve abundance. You must think in this ‘certain way.’
Wallace proceeds to point out that anyone can think in this way. The only obstacles to it are our own personal thinking roadblocks.
Chapter 3:
NO man is kept poor because opportunity has been taken away from him; because other people have monopolized the wealth, and have put a fence around it. You may be shut off from engaging in business in certain lines, but there are other channels open to you
There is no limit to wealth. What really restricts us is our own thinking that there is a limitation to wealth. Perhaps you are engaged in a business right now and feel trapped in it. There is nothing stopping you from leaving. It’s just a matter of answering the question - are you willing to face the consequences? Are you really ready for it? It’s a question of choice.
You must think be like water - it flows and overcomes any obstacles that are set before it. From the top of the mountain where ice melts, the streams go through rock, soil, plants, and whatever to meet the sea. Surprisingly, living things are attracted to the stream because of the living essence it provides all.
Be like water.
Opportunities are always around. It comes and goes. Wallace indicates that monopoly exists only to those who believe it exists. People can overcome it or even go past beyond it.
